February 7, 2012 Cy Creek vs. Cy Ranch
The Cypress Ranch Mustangs Varsity Basketball team traveled to Cy Creek for their only game against the Cougars. The game started out fast with the Cougars sinking their 3-point shots. The Mustangs got behind, ending the first quarter at 17 to 6. The Mustangs came back strong in the second quarter. Increased defense and getting the ball inside closed the gap and the Mustangs ended the first half slightly behind at 26 to 24. The third quarter had the Mustangs and Cougars neck-and-neck. The Mustangs were able to edge ahead, ending the third at 41 to 43. The Mustangs kept their momentum throughout the quarter and beat the Cougars! Final score Cougars 46 to Mustangs 59.

January 27, 2012 Cy Ranch vs. Cy Falls
The Cypress Ranch Mustangs Varsity Basketball team welcomed the Cy Falls Eagles to their home. The Cy Falls Eagles were ranked 70th in the nation (per www.maxpreps.com) prior to the game. The Mustangs played strong, but the Eagles got the lead early in the game and ended the first half ahead at 17 to 38. Even with the Eagles ahead, the Mustangs continued to play strong and never gave up! Final score Mustangs 61 to Eagles 77.

January 24, 2012 Cy Ranch vs. Cy Woods
The Cypress Ranch Mustangs Varsity Basketball team traveled to the Berry Center for their game against Cy Woods. The Mustangs played well. Playing in control and waiting for the right opportunity helped them end the first half in the lead at 30 to 23. The Wildcats came back in the third quarter within three points of the Mustangs. The Mustangs focused on defense and increased their lead, ending the quarter ahead at 37 to 30. The Wildcats came back strong in the fourth quarter. With eight seconds remaining in the game, the Mustangs were behind at 45 to 46. With seven seconds left, the Mustangs fouled the Wildcats making the score 45 to 48. The last three seconds of the game had #34 Dylan Schad inbounding the ball to #44 Tanner Hoyt who hit a three and tied the game! Overtime began and the teams were neck-and-neck. With forty seconds remaining, #23 Kenneth Taylor inbounded the ball to #44 Tanner Hoyt who made a beautiful hook shot to tie the game. The second overtime began well, but the Wildcats took the lead. Even with several opportunities, the Mustangs were not able to regain the lead. Final score Mustangs 53 to Wildcats 59.

January 10, 2012. Cy Ridge vs. Cy Ranch
The Cypress Ranch Mustangs Varsity Basketball team arrived at Cy Ridge High School ready to play. The Mustangs started the game with a new found energy. The Mustangs were hot and played a quick and aggressive game. Beautiful, strategic passes along with an abundance of assists earned the Mustangs a nineteen point lead at the end of the first half 34 to 53. The energy level waivered a bit in the third quarter and found the Mustangs only putting eight points on the board. The Mustangs were able to maintain their lead and ended the third quarter at 49 to 61. The fourth quarter found Cy Ridge closing in on the Mustangs. Mustang determination and strength prevailed resulting in a well-deserved win! Final score Cy Ridge 73 to Mustangs 78.

December 8 - 10, 2011 Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament
On Thursday, December 8th, the Cy Ranch Mustangs Varsity Basketball team started the double elimination
tournament on their home turf against Atascosita. The Mustangs came ready to play. They began the game
strong, shooting mostly from the outside. During the second quarter, the Mustangs moved the ball inside
and set a good pace for the game. They finished the first half strong in the lead (23 to 18). The second
half found the Mustangs really wanting this win. Their communication could be heard from the stands. They
increased their lead and kept it till the end. The Mustangs sealed the win. Final score Mustangs 54 to
Atascosita 45.

On Friday, December 9th, game two was played at Langham Creek against Dekaney at noon. The game was a tough
one for the Mustangs. Dekaney came out to win and took control of the game in the first quarter. The Mustangs
did not give up. They played hard but could not close the gap. Final score Mustangs 36 to Dekaney 67.

The third game was held Friday evening at Cy Lakes against Spring. The Mustangs defeated Spring in the Border
Battle and they were ready for a repeat performance. The teams seemed equally matched. Toward the end of the
first quarter, the Mustangs started to work the ball inside. For a few minutes in the first half, the Mustangs
got behind but closed the gap ending the first half slightly behind at 26 to 27. The Mustangs stayed strong
throughout the second half. In the last minute of the game, the play to take the lead was attempted, but did
not go in favor of the Mustangs. A hard fought game ended in a loss. Final score Mustangs 51 Spring 55.

Klein High School emerged as Tournament Champions after they defeated Cy Falls in the championship game.
December 1 – 3, 2011 Spring Branch ISD Invitational Varsity Boys Basketball Tournament
The Cypress Ranch Mustangs Varsity Basketball team headed to Memorial High School for their first game in the Spring Branch ISD tournament. Their first opponent was Jones. The Mustangs went head to head with Jones and ended the first quarter with a small lead (18 to 16). In the second quarter, the Mustangs stayed strong. Taking mostly outside shots and hustling helped the Mustangs widen their lead at the end of the first half (33 to 24). At the start of the second half, Jones came out ready to play and played very physical. The Mustangs matched their play and maintained the lead, ending the third quarter at 44 to 34. The fourth quarter was rough for the Mustangs. They had trouble breaking the press and only scored four points in the quarter. The last seconds of the game did not go their way resulting in a Mustang loss. Final score Mustangs 48 to Jones 49.
The Mustangs played Jersey Village for their second game of the tournament. The Mustangs arrived at Memorial High School ready to win. Hustle and good communication was evident on the floor. The Mustangs ended the quarter in the lead 8 to 5. The hustle and communication continued in the second quarter. The Mustangs were charged up and ended the first half with a nice lead of 30 to 17. Jersey Village played very physical at the start of the second half. Missed shots and few rebounds allowed Jersey Village to close the gap. The third quarter ended with the Mustangs still ahead with a small lead 38 to 35. In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs got busy. Jersey Village tied the game early in the fourth at 38, but the Mustangs did not give up. They fought back and regained the lead, resulting in a Mustang win! Final score Mustangs 52 to Jersey Village 42.
The third game was played at Don Coleman Coliseum against Lamar Consolidated. The Mustangs started the game strong. Their shots were dropping and they took the lead in the first quarter 18 to 7. The Mustangs continued to race in the second quarter. Increasing the lead with three-point shots enabled the Mustangs to end the first half with a nice lead at 34 to 20. The second half was not as favorable to the Mustangs. The Mustangs had trouble making their shots and seemed to be very flat in their play. They slowly lost the lead, but remained neck and neck with Lamar Consolidated ending the third quarter one point ahead at 42 to 41. The Mustangs went toe to toe with Lamar Consolidated throughout the fourth quarter. An unbelievable put back of a missed Lamar lay-up at the buzzer cinched the win for Lamar Consolidated and the loss for the Mustangs. Final score Mustangs 54 to Lamar Consolidated 56.

November 29, 2011 CY Ranch vs. Fort Bend Austin
The Cypress Ranch Mustangs Varsity Basketball team opened their home to Fort Bend Austin in hopes of another win. The game started off well with a low scoring first quarter ending in a tie at 6 points each. The Mustangs worked the ball in and were able to end the first half leading Ft. Bend Austin 18 to 17. The Mustangs went up by 10 points early in the third quarter, only to end the quarter in another tie at 33 points each. The Mustangs fought hard, but Ft. Bend Austin was able to gain the lead. In the last seconds of the game, the Mustangs had two three point opportunities to tie the game, but neither attempt came to fruition. Despite their hard work and effort, victory escaped the Mustangs. Final score Mustangs 49 to Ft. Bend Austin 52.

November 23, 2011 Border Battle Spring vs. CY Ranch
The Cypress Ranch Mustangs Varsity Basketball team headed to Spring High School for the Border Battle between District 13-5A and District 17-5A. Sixteen teams battled the day before Thanksgiving. The Mustangs’ opponent was Spring High School. Spring High School had height, but the Mustangs came out strong and fought for the lead ending the first quarter 10 to 12. The Mustangs found their groove in the second quarter. They started penetrating the lane and hitting their two point shots creating a ten point lead. The second quarter ended with the Mustangs ahead 18 to 28. After the half, the game became very physical. Spring was all over the Mustangs, but the Mustangs remained strong and increased their lead ending the third quarter ahead 27 to 41. The mustangs slowly lost their lead in the fourth quarter. Letting up on defense and getting into foul trouble allowed Spring to slowly close the gap. Even with the last 30 seconds of the game turning into a free-for-all, the Mustangs held on to their lead and won the game 48 to 50! A hard fought victory for the Mustangs!

November 22, 2011 Kempner vs. CY Ranch
The Cypress Ranch Mustang Varsity Basketball team traveled to Kempner to play before a packed gymnasium. Kempner had a three point shooter who made most of their points; however, the Mustang defense was successful in shutting down their huge post. The Mustangs held their own in speed and defense, but ended the first quarter behind 19 to 13. The Mustangs worked hard in the second quarter, but missed opportunities and turnovers resulted in the Mustangs trailing 33 to 25. After the half, the Mustangs were charged and ready to play. They closed the lead and were often behind by just five points. Fouls got the Mustangs into trouble and they ended the third quarter down 47 to 40. The fourth quarter was tough. The Mustangs played hard, but fell further behind. Despite all their hard work and effort, the Mustangs fell short and lost their first game 62 to 52.

November 18, 2011 CY Ranch Mustangs vs. Aldine Nimitz
The Cypress Ranch Mustangs Varsity Basketball team opened their home to Aldine Nimitz for their first home game of the season. The Mustangs were ready to sink the Nimitz! In the first quarter, #44 Tanner Hoyt was on fire! The quarter ended with Mustangs ahead 25 to 13. The second quarter was tougher for the Mustangs. Several Mustang mistakes and turn-overs allowed Nimitz to close the gap, ending the quarter with Mustangs still ahead 37 to 35. The Mustangs worked hard during the third quarter, but Aldine Nimitz came back from the first half supercharged. Hesitation in execution and being out of position cost the Mustangs points as they ended the quarter behind Aldine Nimitz 53 to 55. In the fourth quarter, the tide changed for Nimitz! The Mustangs wanted to win. In a beautiful three point shot, #3 Daniel Baladez tied the game. #34 Dylan Schad followed with a three point shot, putting the Mustangs in the lead 68 to 67 with ten seconds remaining! Aldine Nimitz devised their plan to score in the last ten seconds, but their efforts were thwarted by #1 Marcus Haraway. His steal sealed the win for the Mustangs. Final score Mustangs 68 to Aldine Nimitz 67.

November 15, 2011 Cinco Ranch vs. CY Ranch Mustangs
The Cypress Ranch Mustangs Varsity Basketball team began their season with an incredible game against Cinco Ranch High School. The Mustangs arrived at Cinco Ranch ready to play and gave the spectators a roller coaster ride of excitement. The game was close throughout and was tied in the last 15 seconds of the fourth quarter. Coach Huffmeister called a time-out to instruct the team on a game winning play. Unfortunately, a slight hesitation in getting the ball to the shooter resulted in a rushed shot ending the game in a tie (43-43). The Mustangs were ready for the overtime. They fought hard and ended the first four minute overtime in another tie! The Mustangs came into the second overtime on fire! They lit up the board and beat Cinco Ranch (Cinco 52 to Mustangs 62)!

Greater Houston Area Basketball Coaches Association Shootout
The Cypress Ranch varsity boys basketball team participated in the Greater Houston Area Basketball Coaches Association shootout this past weekend. The team finished the day going 5-1 in the 6 mini games. The mustangs took down Magnolia, Cinco Ranch, Tomball Memorial, Stratford and Waller before losing a close one to Klein Oak in sudden death overtime.
